October Break- Day 5 & 6

Sanya, Hainan

The epic typhoon hit Sanya on Day 5, do we retreated to the relaxing hot springs farther north on the island. We had a jam packed ride, I believe 14 of us including driver with only 12 seats. But we made it fun nonetheless. The hot springs themselves were more manmade than anything considering they were advertised as “natural”. Still they were pretty cool. Jack and I loved the fish therapy spring. Basically tons of little fish that can live in warmer temperature water, come and eat off your dead skin on your feet and other body parts if they can get to them. My feet needed this after living in Changsha dirt for two months. It tickled at first but you got used to it after awhile. Jack and I stayed in the one pool for over a half an hour! They also had other interesting springs, like coconut milk and coffee and tea like the photo above. Overall, it was a great day to spend an overcast, rainy day and still enjoy vacation. Upon returning to the hostel, we broke down and indulged in some American food. The Canadians we met, found this great sports bar called The Dolphin. Each day they ran a special meal for 50 kuai. The evening of day 5 was a pizza and pint of Tiger beer for 50 kuai. I got a BBQ chicken pizza, my favorite, and it was delicious. Then we quickly returned to the hostel for the PJ/Dumpling party. Our hostel owner had brought everyone Hainan style PJ’s, which we all enjoyed wearing and was a great souveneir to bring home. Have of the group went clubbing later that evening, I was lame and stayed in to catch some zzzz.

Day 6 turned out to be the best beach day all week. The typhoon went a different direction and did not hit Sanya. Therefore, we got sunshine instead. Jack and I got to the beach around noon and basically only left to get lunch. The ocean was warm and had great waves. We used an intertube for awhile and played volleyball at sunset with fellow Chinese beachers. The sunset was also beautiful and I tried to catch some photos before it set behind the mountain. At dusk, we returned to the hostel and got ready for a night cruise on a yacht. Everyone was pretty stoked for this because it was advertised as a great time. We were highly disappointed. Not only were there not enough seats for all aboard, but I got very sea sick. The close quarters, cigarette smoke and alcohol was not a good combination. We did get entertained by a show of interesting cast. A gogo dancer who danced to britney spears, a masked man, a clown and a contortionst that did things with his body no one should be able to do. Jack had a good time and hung out with the hostel owner, Ross. Some of us decided to take a motorcycle jitney home to only be let out halfway and had to walk the rest. We ended the night with some drinks and food at the Dolphin and returned for some beauty sleep to mend out sunburned skin.
